It\u2019s a portfolio of experiences.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the sooner you embrace that, the sooner you unlock your true potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image Incorporated<\/em>, you are not an employee moving up a rigid structure.<br>You are a dynamic enterprise\u2014constantly evolving, investing, and adapting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every role you take on\u2026<br>Every project you try\u2026<br>Every risk, success, and even failure\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are all <strong>assets in your portfolio<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some will yield immediate returns.<br>Others will take years to pay off.<br>And some will teach you what <em>not<\/em> to do\u2014which may be the most valuable return of all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>My Story: From Senior Clerk to Associate Dean<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Early in my career at UC San Diego, I started as a <strong>senior clerk in Student Services<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It wasn\u2019t glamorous.<br>It wasn\u2019t strategic.<br>And at the time, it certainly didn\u2019t feel like the beginning of a path to leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what I didn\u2019t realize then was that I was learning some of the most important lessons of my career:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How to serve students directly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How systems actually work on the front lines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How to listen, solve problems, and adapt in real time<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>From there, my path didn\u2019t follow a straight line\u2014it expanded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I took on new opportunities.<br>I stepped into roles I wasn\u2019t fully prepared for.<br>I said yes to challenges that stretched me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along the way, I experienced setbacks.<br>Moments of uncertainty.<br>Times when the next step wasn\u2019t clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But each experience added something to my portfolio:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Leadership skills<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strategic thinking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The ability to bring people together and build something bigger than myself<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually, that journey led me to serve as <strong>Staff Advisor to the Regents<\/strong>\u2014a role that gave me a systemwide perspective\u2014and later to my current role as <strong>Associate Dean<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking back, none of it was linear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But all of it was connected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Myth of \u201cWasted Time\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the biggest misconceptions people carry is the fear of wasting time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They worry:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cWhat if this job isn\u2019t the right one?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWhat if I pivot too late?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWhat if I fail?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But in reality, there is no wasted time\u2014only <strong>unrecognized value<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That role that felt like a detour?<br>It taught you resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That project that didn\u2019t succeed?<br>It sharpened your judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That unexpected opportunity?<br>It revealed a new direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each experience adds <strong>skills, perspective, and clarity<\/strong>\u2014the three ingredients of meaningful work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Connecting the Dots (Looking Backward, Not Forward)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Careers rarely make sense when you look ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They make sense when you look back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What feels like a series of disconnected steps today will later reveal a clear pattern:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A skill you developed early becomes your competitive edge later<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A relationship you built unexpectedly opens a critical door<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A risk you took becomes the foundation of your identity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The key is to keep moving, learning, and refining\u2014not waiting for a perfect plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Finding Your Work Passion<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Passion is not something you discover all at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is something you <strong>build over time<\/strong> through:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Exposure to different environments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repetition and mastery of skills<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reflection on what energizes you<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Your passion sits at the intersection of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What you are good at<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What you enjoy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What creates value for others<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And you don\u2019t arrive there in a straight line\u2014you arrive there through <strong>iteration<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Power of Trying, Testing, and Failing<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In a non-linear career, experimentation is not optional\u2014it\u2019s essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You have to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Try things before you feel ready<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Test ideas before they are perfect<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fail without letting it define you<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Each attempt refines your direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each failure sharpens your focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each success builds momentum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is how you move from simply having ideas\u2026 to <strong>bringing out the best in others<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Building Your Personal Stock Value<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you think of yourself as a company\u2014<em>Me Incorporated<\/em>\u2014then every experience affects your value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask yourself regularly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What skills am I investing in?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What experiences am I adding to my portfolio?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What environments bring out my best performance?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Your goal is not just to move forward\u2014it is to <strong>increase your long-term value<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That means being intentional about growth, not just titles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Final Thought: Embrace the Journey<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your career will twist.<br>It will pivot.<br>It will surprise you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s not a flaw in the system\u2014that <em>is<\/em> the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My journey\u2014from senior clerk to Associate Dean\u2014was not planned in a straight line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was built through persistence, curiosity, and a willingness to keep going even when the path wasn\u2019t clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most successful people are not those who follow a perfect path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are the ones who:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Stayed curious<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Took chances<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Learned continuously<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And kept going<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So don\u2019t worry if your path doesn\u2019t look straight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not supposed to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because in the end, it\u2019s not about climbing a ladder\u2014 it\u2019s about building something far more He serves on various community advisory boards and is a founding trustee of Urban Discovery Schools in San Diego, where he currently serves as the president of the UDA Foundation. He has a BA from the University of New Mexico, an MA from the University of San Diego, and a PhD in Postsecondary Adult Education from Capella University.
